Tonight I had an excellent conversation about the difference
between a supportive person and someone who is interested in your dreams. If
you are like me, you probably thought that a supportive person and one who is interested
in your dreams were the same thing. However, as Jessica and I continue to learn
about each other and journey together, I have found
that people who support our dreams and persons who are interested in our dreams are often two different groups. Certainly both will be needed along this journey and neither is more important than the other. As it relates to each other, not only will we need the
interest and support of one another, but we will need to surround ourselves with
persons who support us AND who are interested in the things we are interested
in. But be warned! Don't always look for both qualities in one person. Jessica loves, loves, loves dance. From doing it to teaching choreography
she lives to love the art of DANCE. Check out her
blog JessInTime to read about her passion. As an aspiring good husband, I try
my best to support her every step (or two-step) of the way, but the truth is if you were to ask me if it was also an interest of mine, I would honestly say (clearing my
throat) only when she is performing J.
I am supportive, but am I interested? In order to honestly answer that and also
identify whether persons in your life are called to support you or share you
interest, you first have to identify for yourself what each looks like?
For me, a person that supports me will get out of the way with
their fears and doubts as I run towards my dream with reckless abandonment.
They allow me to move forward, make mistakes, and have failures and victories
without judging or gloating in my stumbling. They will, on occasion,
physically, mentally, and emotionally be present during moments of growth and
when the moments of doubt creep in will support with words of encouragement and
correction if needed and provide their resources when able to. Those are the
markings of a great supporter. So what’s the difference?
Well to me a person who takes interest in your dreams and
goals not only do everything that a person who supports you does, but they
participate in the journey with you every step of the way. More than getting
out the way, the one who takes interest will often be ahead of you yelling “come
this way!”, behind you pushing you to keep moving forward or standing next to
you shouldering the storms that await you. They not only provide encouragement when doubt
pops up, but they encounter the Awe-full discoveries with the same resolve as
you. When you are confounded by roadblocks they not only offer you solutions,
but they are equally as perplexed. A person that is interested in your dreams
and goals will not only cheer you on from the sidelines, but they will be on
the grid iron of life, fighting the battle as a co-Gladiator.
Oh what a blessing to have supporters and persons who are
interested in your dreams. If you don’t, pray that God sends them your way and
if you do take time to thank them for their contributions to your life, dreams
and goals along the way.
